This research examined the effectiveness of group treatment for single mothers versus couples raising children with learning or behavioral challenges. Ninety-three participants took part in small expressive-supportive groups, either as mothers alone or as couples. Both groups showed improvements in stress reduction and parental coping immediately after treatment, but six months later, only the couples maintained their gains, while single mothers experienced some decline. Fathers, however, were generally less motivated to participate across all stages. The study underscores the value of involving both parents in therapy, highlighting the lasting benefits of couple-based interventions and the importance of encouraging greater father engagement in supportive group settings.
